Book: Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire
Originally published in 1968. Latest Indian Edition (paperback) published by Penguin Books Ltd in 2017
This book says - education should not be like putting knowledge into empty pots. Real education is a dialogue.
Freire explains two types:
1. Banking Education - Teacher knows everything, student knows nothing. Teacher deposits knowledge. This makes people silent and obedient.
2. Problem-Posing Education - Teacher and students learn together. They ask questions about their own life, their oppression, and find solutions together.
Main idea: Oppressed people must not become new oppressors. They must liberate themselves AND their oppressors through love, dialogue, and critical thinking. No one liberates anyone else, people liberate together.
Why I like it: It connects directly to small-scale fishers, children, and village work. It teaches us to not just give help, but to sit with people and think together.
Rating: 5/5 - A must-read for anyone who works with community.
