On 20th memorial day of Vanxim

Today February 11, 2026 is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes as well as 20th memorial day of tragic sale of Vanxim (Capao) Island paddy fields by the office of Goa Archbishop to Mahendra Gaunekar and Sonali Gaunekar on February 11, 2006.

This is a day to remember and acknowledge that religious institution in the service community and God can be subverted to opposite purposes.

Gaunkenars then sold Vanxim land to Ozone corporate from Bangalore in 2015.

And struggle continues...

Did chaos trigger Vanxim agitation?

Past few days TV channel in Goa put out interesting narrative on Vanxim Island titled "Goa's abundant island?" with Herman Gomes as an anchor. Click here to youtube view and here for facebook watch. It's also available on Instagram here. The sudden gateway to Vanxim and the accompanying commentary sounds almost vengeful of some creatures who are responsible to the projected reality of Vanxim and narrator declaring a war on Ferry service.

Let's take deep dive into the trajectory on what the video clip tries to convey and what we understand.

It starts with disclosure on why focus on Vanxim. The reason cited is existence of Ferry boat. The narrator escapes to express that before Ferry boat system there were only canoes for centuries.

Then Ferry moves, camera pans on the Cross on in the rocks in Mandovi river. Narration then starts saying that it was constructed in memory of doctor who was drawned in the middle of Mandovi on the way: one of the well known lies peddled (so far online) as truth over past two decades. Surprisingly no one in Vanxim is aware of this drawned doctor. Camera then suddenly gets fixed to some stone inscriptions making unsuspecting consumers of this video believe that these inscriptions are from the cross in the middle of Mandovi while in reality no such inscriptions exists. Inscriptions are captured introduction from some other cross, wonder why?

Latter in the video Marius Fernandes from Malar says the drawned doctor was a father of Mario Soares and then says of Mario D'sa. There is no consistency in the narrative that Marius tries to sell. Mario Soares was the President of Portugal who betryed Goa with his treaty with India while he served as Foreign Minister of Portugal on 31 December 1974. There are two Mario involved. Not sure as to whose father is involved here in drawning death. We need to get death certificates of the two fathers of two Marios.

Then narrative proceeds on to Vanxim Church and the writings of the wall first time. Comments are fine at the time.

Then there is narration on Miraculous cross of Vanxim. Again this narration is fine.

Then camera begins to focus on locked doors, broken homes and abandoned houses. It seeks to create a stereotype that all houses in Vanxim are locked, broken and abandoned. There is reference to Sao Mathias Sarpanch with no name mention being from Vanxim, why then Sarpanch's house, door and lock was not focused upon and she interviewed? Why only two elderly women interviewed from Vanxim and three interviewees from outside Vanxim imposing their narratives on behalf of Vanxim? Where do Savio Monteiro and nameless lawyer resides in Vanxim? These questions are pertinent because video ends with words "people of Vanxim have spoken out". Vanxim Island has just two eldrrly women residing? Was the video capsule meant to be sort of sealer on public opinion?

There is an advocacy statement in the narrative that Vanxim needs "better transport facility apart from ferry". In both the elderly women interviews this thesis that Herman Gomes puts out but fails to stand waters. In the first interview elderly lady simply says island needs better Ferry facility and also health facility (doctor). In the interview with second lady Herman himself thrusts subject of Divar-Vanxim bridge head on. She says yes bridge is needed. Then Herman himself checkmates and point out that if bridge is built the builders (real estate) will take over Vanxim.

Narrative then proceeds to desperate levels. It invents character of girl from the island who decided to get married. Then on the day of marriage Ferry broke. Bride still reached her wedding destination though late. How did she reached;not told. Name of bride; not shared. Year and day of this incident; not disclosed. Whether Ferry was repaired or she went in canoe; not disclosed. How late was she for her wedding nuptial; not disclosed. It looks to be imaginary invention to create market for Vanxim bridge. Or what else? Why was it not told that on the day of weddings in Vanxim there were two Ferry boats plying between Divar and Vanxim whole day on 01 January 2014? Something not in place about this video.

What is most interesting about the video is that the narrative goes that it takes minutes to cross the Vanxim Ferry. And it's true. It doesn't take hours. Seven minutes to be precise but not disclosed in the video.

Then Video returns back to the Church and dishes out interesting interpretation of the writings on the front wall top of the Church. Narrator actually goes berserk and desperate in konkani "people are forced to worship God because government doesn't care!". Incredible hermeneutics! It means if government had to care then people would not worship God. The question pushed under the carpet: Did the  office of Goa Archbishop care before selling Vanxim in 2006?

Herman Gomes also makes unusual comparative claim that "Divar is famous. Vanxim is not famous." Herman Gomes cleverly avoids pointers towards infamous sale of Vanxim through complex machinations of corruption in the office of Goa Archbishop on February 11, 2006 by the one who is Cardinal currently. Why so?

Unnamed lawyer (why his name not given) is giving his advise on how Vanxim can be protected in three parts:

1. Through declaring Vanxim as biological Hotspot.

2. Through declaring Vanxim as Ecologically Sensitive Zone

3. Through declaring Vanxim natural cover.

Well appreciative suggestions but looking at track record of the way things have happened in past even water body at Survey no.8 of Vanxim (Capao) nearly 48,000 sq.meters has been declared as settlement Zone. These suggestions can be taken by legally literate and politically illiterate and immature people.

Vanxim can be protected by always remembering and publicly recalling that Vanxim is ruined up due to the corruption in the office of Goa Archbishop. We need leadership here to move ahead.

Some Savio Monteiro speak in the video about the oncoming(?) real estate project in Vanxim. He starts his narrative with disapproval and shock but then arrives at rather strange conclusion that Vanxim agitation was motivated by Chaos. This is a very serious charge that creates ground to suspect the motivation and the agenda of this video. Was it designed as surgical strike against people of Vanxim?

Who are the behind the scenes operators and motivators of this video? Is this corporate operation on Vanxim to sell off idea of bridge? It looks to be considering bridge and retaining walls are two necessities required for corporate takeover of Vanxim.

Herman Gomes has spoken nothing about illegal sand mining on Vanxim Island that takes place daily at night.

History has records of journalists who indulged in paid journalism and had to pay for it after they were exposed. One of them was national daily in Goa. Another one was working for Goa based TV channels. There are some more too.

Two years ago Chief Minister and Cumbharjua MLA tried to push through bridge agenda for. They did not succeed. Perhaps some vested interests have conceived mind control program now. Statement of Savio Monteiro make it clear that the video is directed against Vanxim agitation. Vanxim agitation led by late Maggie Silveira has created daring legacy as the President of Bharat Mukti Morcha, Goa Unit. No one should have any misconceptions that fire of her zeal and intensity of love for the Vanxim Island lives on through the blazing trail she has left behind. Herman Gomes, Savio Monteiro, Marius Fernandes and everyone else need to remember and honor this. Vanxim is made what it is due to rot of corruption in the office of Goa Archbishop. They are the ones who have opened doors of Vanxim to corporates and real estate sharks. Superficial narratives like this will be responded with counter-narrative  everytime.

Please leave our Vanxim Ferry alone!

Tribute to John Agustinho Vincente Fernandes from Vanxim

He walked tall in Vanxim. I got to know him 15 years ago when Vanxim agitation broke out. Some villagers had formed a team in 2010 to wage campaign to defend their island. This team was known as "Ilha de Vanxim Association". Uncle John was one of the integral part of this formation that organised three public meetings in front of Vanxim Church in late 2010.

He continued his support what Bharat Mukti Morcha, Goa Unit got actively engaged in defence of Vanxim with leadership powers delegated to Margarida Silveira in 2011.

John Fernandes gave all that was required organisational and prayer support to defend Vanxim Island.

15 years ago when Vanxim agitation began to create waves across Goa John Fernandes was 72 years young. At that age he demonstrated capacity and ability to take stand in defence of Vanxim. He gave all the necessary co-operation to late Margarida Silveira in every way possible.

Within all his limitations John Fernandes stood taller than his height. His defence of Vanxim as I know him personally was uncompromising till his health permitted him to do so.

At an annual prayer service Ladainha to cross in front of his Vanxim house he always prayed for defence and protection of Vanxim island from all the predators around.

In his death his resounding voice will always be missed. Yet his uncompromising stand in defence of Vanxim has created another stream of legacy that enriches legacy left before us by Margarida Silveira in defence of Vanxim Island. These are the legacies that transcends death.

His life teaches us that it's possible for a man to walk tall against the tide even it means to begin at 72 and end at 87. Apart from everything else this is something that I would always remember and respect Uncle John - as I used to call him - for what his contributions was to defend Vanxim specially during those turbulent times from 2010 to 2019. May God grant eternal rest unto his soul.

God granted him rare privilege to be born in 1938 and to be recalled in 2025 on the same day of 4th May. His life is confluence of joy and sorrow merged into one at its zenith.

My heartfelt condolences to all his family members at home - Dorothy, Gregory, Jelton, Judy, Kimberly, Denzil, Effie, Nia and Rebecca - those that cared and loved.

Thank you and Good bye uncle John for all that you have been to your family and to Vanxim in your unassuming yet significant ways.

May your long life be a candle of light to all that seek inspiration for the choices that you made to defend your beloved Vanxim Island.

Sand mining in Mandovi river as encountered...

[22/11, 10:06 pm] Sebastian Rodrigues: Two canoes illegaly extracting sand near Vanxim Ferry boat now at 10.05 pm.

[22/11, 10:36 pm] Sebastian Rodrigues: Cops from Old Goa came and stood at Divar Ferry Jetty at 10.30 pm. And said they cannot see any lights of the boats in the river. How can lights be seen when they are operating with light off?

Police concluded that no sand mining is going on and went back.

They further Said that even if they had to see then they would not be able to do anything as they don't have boats to go the water.

Police said that at the time of complaining it must be told at 112 emergency service to relay message to coastal security police station.

This response and behavior is expected from Old Goa Police Station as those carrying on sand mining in Vanxim are directed from the very same Police station.

Earlier it was proved that leakage of information to sand mining operators in Mandovi is continues through one of the Police personel.

[23/11, 12:12 am] Sebastian Rodrigues: Cops from the Superitendent of Superitendent of Police (Coastal Security), Panjim reached Vanxin Ferry point, Divar at 11.55 pm, full two hours after the complaint.

They too came in Jeep but they had torch with them. They flashed their torch in the river and concluded that there are no sand mining boats engaged in their action against law.

On verification it was found that indeed sand mining canoes had gone away Vanxim Ferry point.

Police took leave at 12.00 am. On concluding note they said they have to attend another sand mining complaint call somewhere. They claimed they are doing this for the country.

Corporate hand behind Cumbharjua MLA Video advocating Vanxim- Divar bridge?

Cumbharjua Member of the Goa Legislative Assembly transforming into ammunition of corporate arsenals is not a new feature. There used to be one Madkaikar who played that role for Ozone Leisue private limited during his tenure.

These days negotiations are on between Delhi based DLF and Bangalore based Ozone Leisure Private Limited on Vanxim. Ozone who got Vanxim land in their name from the office of Goa Archbishop via Mahendra Gaunekar now attempting to sell off the same to DLF. This is one of the most notorious land deals by the office of Goa Archbishop in Goa Church history.

We note that DLF personel are carrying on visits to Vanxim these days and parallely Cumbharjua MLA has got video vocal to construct bridge to Vanxim from Divar threby by ruining both the islands.

https://youtu.be/nPjMm6btyWM?si=--NQ7SPb7BeoZ4to

It's plausible that the MLA has taken briefs to do, so that  real estate value of Vanxim Island can be hiked. Considering the history of said MLA recorded officially through the complaint of Amber Timblo in mining robbery case in Sanguem such shaddy deal comes naturally as legacy.

None who played around with Vanxim were spared in the past and none will be spared henceforth, not even the Cumbharjua MLA. Earlier he realizes better it is for him.

Is is now pretty clear that corporate has put in place sustained advocacy campaign team that includes Cumbharjua MLA, Goa Chief Minister and more. Yet people of Vanxim and Divar refuse to tolerate their aggression and will be  countered appropriately, jointly, come what may. We dare!

It must be noted that People of Vanxim vehemently opposed Vanxim - Divar bridge idea at the Sao Mathias Gram Sabha on Sunday 10 November 2024. Opposition to bridge has rattled corporate intentions and we now see who is cleaverly defending corporate camp: Cumbharjua MLA! He perhaps believes to his peril that he can fool every one with his handful of kitty tricks.

Who believes in promises of Politicians?

Vanxim bridge will uproot and expel locals

Tomas Amansio Rodrigues made some bold statements about Vanxim Island and politicians' attempt to connect it via bridge in Herald on 22nd September 2024 in his article titled "Triple blows threatens Island of Divar".

https://epaper.heraldgoa.in/article/oHeraldo?OrgId=229388a4b4d&eid=1&imageview=0&standalone=1&device=desktop

We take up his important observations for reflections in some detail - sentence by sentence - from 16 sentences about Vanxim with gratitude to Tomas AmansioRodrigues.

1. "Announcement by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on 24 August 2024 during harvest festival in Divar to construct bridge connecting Divar island to Vanxim Island." This announcement is the first threat to Divar Island and foremost threat to Vanxim Island as well threatening the very identity of the two islands in the first place.

2. "Chief Minister's statement coming at a cultural festival surprised many as the long term residents of Divar." In fact the utterances from Chief Minister were much more than surprise. They were shocking indeed. The harvest festival of Bonderam got coup in its very essence from being festival of harvest that was observed by local communidade till some decades ago to festival of real estate (Rajdeep builders and Vianaar) and other corporate ( Coca cola) bonanza. How did this transition happened? Who are the people at the leadership position of PYA allowed such a massive real estate and corporate takeover of Divar's Bonderam?

3. "Divadkars have always opposed a bridge." This is indeed significant collective decision of Divar people that has ensured safety of Divar from rapid and voracious real estate predators. Divadkars deserve appreciation from one and all.

4. "It is only few new residents of Divar that are in favour of bridge." Most of these residents are from different parts of India, accustomed to lifestyle that is different, and often hostile to ethos of Divar Island. They can settle in Divar thanks to the historical annexure of Goa through conquest by India.

5. "Besides, there has never been any demand for bridge from Vanxim, a small island connected to Divar via ferry." This is indeed so. There has never been a demand for bridge from Vanxim. The first time the idea of bridge got seeded in 2010 after Goa Archbishop's office twin sale deeds of February 11, 2006  involving paddy fields of Vanxim to Mahendra Gaunekar and his wife Sonali Gaunekar surfaced on the media. In August 2015 Mahendra Gaunekar sold off same Paddy fields to Ozone Leisure Private Limited for over 15 crore rupees. Few people from Vanxim got deceived then and were used as mouthpiece calling for the bridge connecting Vanxim. Many have realized their copirate hijacking. In fact corporate records reveals bridge as one of the primary requirements (other requirement being construction of retaining wall around entire Vanxim island) to see through realization of installation of five star hotel, luxury villas, helipad, Golf Course and Marina in the middle of Mandovi river inside the paddy fields: unusual harvest plans!

6. "Vanxim has about dozen houses that are inhabited through the year." Yes, slightly more than a dozen to be precise. People of Vanxim gradually moved away from Vanxim to settle all over Goa, India and even beyond.

7. "Other houses remain close most of the year, with people coming there only on holidays." Yes, people visit Vanxim in the month of April-May-June, few in December too.

8. "If one conducts cost-benefit analysis of a bridge to this island, then surely cost will outweigh the benefits." Yes, Ferry services serves well to the island. Avoiding direct road connectivity had protected Vanxim from real estate invasion. Bridge construction will pave way to swallowing of Vanxim Island by corporate greed. Chopdem-Siolim bridge has facilitated tourism invasion of coastal coastal Pernem at unprecedented scale to a level that local people are subjected to acute distress.

9. "I am not merely referring to financial costs here but also to environmental costs." In addition to financial and environmental costs there are also social costs that are never taken into account but very important. One can have peaceful sleep in Vanxim without any vehicular disturbances. Only disturbances in awful odors at Amboi ferry junction due to release of sewage into Mandovi river through underground pipeline from hotel closeby to Ferry ramp.

10. "A bridge cannot be erected without approach roads at either ends." Yes, this is valid poin raised. Huge amount of land on both the islands will have to utilized for approach road to erect the bridge. This is simply bad idea.

11. "Vanxim is so small an island, that one wonders where the approach road will be built."  Yes, Vanxim as island doesn't have sufficient land for such suicidal projects.

12. "Similarly on Divar end, where will approach road begin?" Yes, Divar or Malar stands to loose its land.

13. "How much land will be lost to this, and how many hills be be cut to create the approach roads?" Yes, this is good dimension brought into debate. Mining has ready slashed so many hills of Goa already. Mulgao, Advalpal, Sirgao, Bicholim are already pointers in this direction.

14. "The benefits of such a bridge, if any,  will be only be available to corporates who have for long eye on Vanxim to develop it for tourism purposes." This correct. Bridge is primarily motivation from corporates as they already have most of Vanxim geography under their fraudulent control.

15. "This has been opposed in the past and will be opposed in the future." Yes, it continues to be opposed.

16. "It is obvious to us islanders that the bridge to Vanxim is only to facilitate luxury tourism and 11 households will be displaced once bridge comes up." Yes, attempts for far towards displacements are opposed and opposition continues.

Additionally it must be acknowledged that political leadership including Cumbharjua MLA and Goa Chief Minister are taking up the Vanxim bridge cause is clear indication that their nexus with corporates is firm. Corporate interest is masked and dark faces behind the mask is traceable rather easily.

When the dead raise their voices...

When the dead raise their voice...

It's Goa's environment Ministry that is facilitating take over of paddy fields of Divar Island for Mangroves cultivation. It has called for inspection of site on 28 August 2024 at 11.00 am.

Environment Ministry of BJP government in Goa is headed by Alexio Sequira who never got elected as BJP MLA. He is in BJP thanks to horse trading after getting elected as Congress MLA from Nuvem. The process is essentially fraud and betrayal of open public trust. He has sold his soul and he can sell anything else, Divar, Vanxim, St. Estevam, Chorao and even whole of Goa!

Same is the case with Cumbharjua MLA Rajesh Faldesai. He was elected as Congress MLA and sold himself to BJP. He can sell anything and everyone. He has given enough donations to churches and chapels, temples and clubs. He can cut hands of Old Goa Panch and he can cheat Ambar Timblo. This monster canaflouges well as Philanteopist. He give ten thousand and robs ten crores. No one can beat him for he is the best and the brave!

And who funded BJP to buy MLAS in dozens? Surely there is no rocket science involved. Corporates into real estates who financed Divar Bonderam can certainly be counted in for this nefarious act to ruin Goa.

Carefully look at the Mangroves trajectory indicates certain pattern: stop paddy cultivation. Allow Mangroves to grow in. Then put debris on top of the Mangroves. Then use the reclaimed land for real estate purpose. This is the case of Mangroves around Panjim, Santa Cruz, Merces and Taleigao.

Mangroves that grew in Paddy fields at Chorao Island in Mandovi river were taken over by Forest department and declared Salim Ali Wild life Sanctuary.

In both the cases agriculture suffered; creating the dangerous situation of food insecurity.

The instance of Mangroves in Vanxim Island in Mandovi too needs attention. Major portion of the island consists of paddy fields. In 1990s these khazan land embankment were deliberately opened up by few unscrupulous elements flooding paddy fields and starting prawns farming. The project failed. And so paddy fields failed. Office of Goa Archbishop sold the paddy fields and embankment of Khazan lands of area over 5 lakh square meters to Mahendra Gaunekar. Food insecurity abounds. From food surplus island it turned into food deficient after paddy cultivation was disrupted.

Litigations were started by Mahendra Gaunekar against Vanxim tenants. Negative declarations were forced upon saying that they never cultivated the paddy fields and their names are entered on land records of revenue department by mistake. The names were deleted. Mahendra Gaunekar's name was entered in. After few years Mahendra Gaunekar executed sale deed and Ozone Leisure Private Limited entered in land records. Few however refused to give in. Maggie Silveira fought valiantly. Today she rests in grave at Vanxim cementry. Her voice thunders even today for the voice of the dead one shall rise, Vanxim ancestors will awake. Vanxim protector is in rage. This time it's Pramod Sawant, Rajesh Faldesai, and all those who played mischief at the St. Mathias Panchayat asking for the bridge to be conduit for corporate expansion.

Vanxim is attempted to be looted over 25 years right from 1998. The bridge proposed is not for the love Vanxim people. It's for the benefit of the corporate who has taken over Vanxim paddy fields thanks to corruption in the office of the Goa Archbishop. Until Vanxim lands are taken back from the corporate control and ownership people of Vanxim are not safe.

Virus of corruption has originated at Altinho, Panjim where this office is located and has spread rapidly everywhere else too. This virus of corruption shall be combated tooth and nail.

The spirit and legacy of combat that Maggie has left for us will pick up the torn flag even in rags and march against monsters on their face.

It's no longer issue of Vanxim. Corporate assaults are planned additionally on Divar, Malar, St. Estevam, Cumbharjua. There are corporates lined up: Third eye vision, Rajdeep builders, Vianaar and more.

Let's all move as single fist, formidable team. Time to tame all the corporate beasts preying our islands.

Let's not allow BJP-corporate gangs to snatch away our land. Our Peace.

Let's move step by step, in style.

The battle is not just about our islands. It's battle about Goa. Betrayal of Goa's leadership in 1961 in accepting decision of Soviet Veto power exercised over Goa on 18 December 1961 is the culprit. It is for thus reason today Facebook is full of lust and greedy video advertisement ro sell Goa's land to wealthy buyers from outside Goa.

It is urgent that we push hard for inclusion of Goa Veto day 18 December on the table of discussion to forge future full of hope for Goa of tomorrow, combat corporate combat lasting for our land.

Information has just trikled in that Colva Church lands too are our for sale. We need to protest. And we need to protest against Soviet Veto on Goa that put Goa for sale after brainwashing everyone as Liberation. How long truth will remain buried under the carpet?

Diwar Bonderam as Bridge to Vanxim?

Divar Bonderam as bridge to Vanxim?

Vanxim scam that originated in echelons of clerical headquarters in Altinho in February 2006 with scandalous morally wrong sale deed seems to have got dirty wings with Goa CM Sawnt declaration of bridge connecting Vanxim to Divar Island.

The bridge is pre-requsite to intensity land grab of the island. Paddy fields, fishery, peaceful life style.

Mahendra Gaunekar, Sonali Gaunekar, Ozone corporate, Fr. Arline D'mello, Archbishop Cardinal Ferrao Ferrao are part of this shoddy deal on record. There are shaddy behind the scenes sneeze operators.

They visualize Vanxim differently, luxuriously with tourism, luxury housing as chief focus, clandastine agenda.

Since this scam is creation of clergymen it is the duty of the clergy to intervene and get Vanxim out of clutches of the likes of Sawant, Faldesai.

Festival of Bonderam has been used to make declaration on Bridge at Vanxim is indeed instructive.

People not only Vanxim but also from  Divar and Malar must see through various land grab scams. Vianaar, FORREST are just two of them on radar, visible.

One who pays bagpipper calls the tune. One who sponsors the events expects submissions to agendas of doubtful motives.

Thats how we are today.

Attack on Vanxim today is attack on Divar, Malar, and rest of Goa as well.

It's invasion. We had Goa annexed through conquest in 1961. Today it's dispossesion of Land from Goans to be handed over to posh ones.

Currently we even have law to take over the properties. The real estate interests not only dominates Divar Banderam but also controls and directs current BJP government in Goa.

Man charged with dozen criminal sections for looting iron by Ambar Tomblo is current legislator from Cumbharjua that lobbies for bridge at Vanxim. Intention that is criminal has its origin is certain to have enslaving outcome.

Let's think through this development and get clear understand on what's been pushed on to us once again.

Vanxim in the context of Goa Agriculture Policy

There are several acres of agricultural land that are taken over through legitimate or illegitimate means for non-agicultural interests such as tourism, mining, real estate, educational institutions, roads, highways, highway expansions and industrial estates over the last three decades in the name of development. This has certainly provided big jolt to Goa's food security and traditional livelihoods systems that were essentially self-sustaining. Current churnings around drafting of Goanagricultire policy has provided added impetus for a collective reflection across state of Goa.

While it is welcome initiative from the Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik to initiate this policy there remains looming concerns about the process and the scope of the policy intentions as put out by Director of Agriculture on May 23, 2023 with later amendments.

State of Goa has brazenly launched war on Goa's food security through multi faced attacked on Goa's land that sustained people in Goa for generations together. Unfortunately State wasn't alone in this ghastly aggression. Goa Archbishop and now Cardinal too joined the race to ruin Goa. With a masterful stroke of a monster he sold off Vanxim paddy fields to his Altinho neighbour Mahendra Gaunekar at a price less than peanut in 2007. This land then got under control of Bangalore based scamster Satyamurti Vasudevan in 2015 and came under IPB jurisdiction through cabinet decision. It's classic study on abuse of position and power by State and Religious authority. Goa Archbishop's office was well aware of Vanxim paddy fields going in the hands of corporate ruffians from the agreement to sale of Vanxim that was executed by then Archbishop Raul N. Gonsalves in April 1999. Yet monstrous trail was allowed to be completed.

From 2010 Mahendra Gaunekar initiated legal proceedings against all the tenants and deemed purchasers in the office of Deputy Collector at Panjim for condonation of delay with Santa Monica Society as the interested party. Deputy Collector passed orders in favour of Mahendra Gaunekar even though deputy collector has no power to do so as argued before Administrative Tribunal by none other than Adv. Mahesh Sonak representing Mahendra Gaunekar and currently Judge at Goa Bench of Bombay High Court. The cases then got revived at Mamlatdar court at Panjim seeking erasure of tenants. Out of 70 tenants on record- 35 from Vanxim and 35 from Naroa, Bicholim (to whom Vanxim people had given to cultivate but tenancy law gave them infinite tenure right over land) nearly 66 connived into getting their names erased as tenant submitting falsely that they never cultivated paddy fields in Vanxim and their names on form I & XIV form was by mistake. Most of them never had their own lawyer and surrendered their land cheaply. Those few who had their lawyer entered into costly deals and got paid several lakh. We were offered too and we refused steadfastly and litigation continues. And this is the reason paddy fields of khazan nature in Mandovi though sold off yet remains under litigation and legal hurdles persists. In not a single instance Archbishop's lawyer in Deputy Collector's court stood up to state the truth that tenants indeed cultivated paddy fields.

Most people in Vanxim seems to have understood as to how Ozone corporate hoodwinked them are now more alert than before.

Bharat Mukti Morcha has called for the investigations into the Vanxim deal with clear terms of references. Unfortunately even CBI has refused to investigate saying that Vanxim is beyond the CBI Jurisdiction.

Inspite of all the blocks in all side we have marched on with flame of dissent in our hand. We walked for 13 years and we invite you to join the journey ahead.

Challenge for all of us is (1) How do we get Ozone kicked out from Vanxim (2) How do we reclaim legal titles again on Vanxim paddy fields (3) How do we start cultivation paddy back again with all the hard work and diligence.

How do we situate Vanxim khazan fileds in the context of Agriculture Policy for Goa much beyond State interpretation? What is people interpretation of Agriculture policy? Considering that several politicians on Goa who are in the Assembly and Parliament allegedly being palm greased by Ozone agents negative approach to Vanxim from politicians and State agencies are anticipated. What we need to focus is on People interpretation and enforcement of agriculture policy to overcome variety of official blockades to ensure Agriculture in Goa is revived inspite of all the blocks.

Silenced mornings

He was known popularly as Athoji, Anthusio Joseph Pinto, 59. He died on May 5, 2022 after a repeat heart attack in GMC. His first stroke was on May 03, 2022 soon after the feast finding of the Holy Cross on Vanxim Island.

I spend an hour with him chatting and joking on his hospital bed on May 04, 2022 evening. He shared with me his experience as to how unbearable pain he suffered in his back at home on May 03, 2022  At that time he said he thought he would die called upon Almighty to remember him. His prediction came true two days later and God recalled his life.

He was joyous that many Vanxim people came to bid farewell to him when he entered the Ambulance as he narrated to me from his hospital bed. And immidiately he extended his right arm in gratitude- sleeping on bed - towards me for visiting him in the hospital. It was warm and affectionate handshake that proved a parting one on the threshold of his entry into eternity. This handshake with joy is a treasure that will remain with me for the rest of my life.

My relations with Anthusio started a dozen years ago in 2010 rather in hostile context of Vanxim agitation. Hostility over the years subsided and finally ended. Relations then turned friendly with regular communications. I dare to admit that Anthusio found unique niche in the core of my life with the way he conducted himself after my wife Margarida died in June 2021. He would daily visit me mostly early in the morning between 6.30 am to 7.30 am, call me out and inquire about my health and Maggie's Aunty's too. He would rely messages from him mother to Aunty. Then he would visit again in the day with invitations for someone's Litany in the Holy Cross Chapel or some other information.

What I found most remarkable about him is his sensitivity towards me. After my wife died inner core of my life was shattered. Many contributed towards my recovery and Anthusio is one unique amongst them. On September 08, 2021 at the feast of Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary I was in Vanxim Church. However due to my intense sorrow surrounding my life I forgot to carry flowers to the feast Mass. At the end of the Mass everyone qued towards alter to offer flowers to Blessed Virgin Mary. Having no flowers I my hand I remained seated on the side of the bench. Anthusio spotted me and extended his hand and shared some of his flowers with me to be offered to the Blessed Virgin Mary. I did take his flowers and with them our relations turned affectionate. He made my feast day meaningful. I was amazed that out of everyone present inside the Church he was sensitive and graceful to share his flowers. I pray to Blessed Virgin Mary that she remembers all his offerings from heart and obtain favour to forgive his sins and guide his soul into Heaven.

He was instrumental in guiding me through in many other aspects of my life which I wouldn't put in here to avoid making this tribute long. I thank God for his most unexpected presence in my life during my most difficult phase of my life. Surely not a leaf moves without command of God. I am left with awe and admiration to wonders of God as how Anthusio -in spite of all his weaknesses and all my weaknesses- was sent as a bearer of encouragement and hope when I was plunged into discouragement and despair. Thank you Lord for everything you have done through Anthusio as your medium.

He loved Catholic Church and told me that after he gets discharged from the hospital he would resume his duty of ringing of the bells. Though he looked good and jovial on May 04, 2022 doctors on duty however informed me that he is still in critical phase though better than the previous day.

There was only one thing on his mind: get back to Vanxim, to care for his Mother and continue his Chapel messenger duties.

My mornings henceforth would begin without his robust voice calling to me and then my neighbor Lawry. For Lawry and me henceforth every day will have Silent morning interspersed with melancholy of chirping birds. I will have to listen extra attentive if any of the birds whiper from the palms Anthusio's robust voice.

Lawry cared for him in GMC to the best of his abilities and was with him in his dying moment  and he too will have much to share about life of Anthusio as he witnessed and experienced him.

I found Anthusio tense after his relative Viviana Marilia Pinto died on May 01, 2022. He came over and informed me about her death immidiately and also opened up and said "I am very rensef on this account." It is now clear that both of them based last moments prior to death on bed no. 01 of Ward no. 143 in GMC. He was shifted to ward 144 bed 12 after he showed improvement before the second heart stroke took him away. He did inquire with me as to number of people came for Viviana's funeral on May 04, 2022 and deeply regretted that he was not able to be present due to his confinement to hospital.

As we bid goodbye to popular Anthusio with tears let's be particular to pray for his soul: Eternal rest grant unto the soul of Anthusio O Lord, Let the perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul rest in Peace. Amen.

Anthusio shared trusted in God as he lived amongst us in Vanxim. Jeremiah 17:7 comforts us that Blessed be the man that trusteth in the Lord, and the Lord shall be his confidence.

May God have mercy on his soul and bestow strength to his family to bear the loss caused. May God help us all in Vanxim to fill the void caused in his death for in his simple yet sensitive ways he touched almost all of us and we all miss him.

We write to express our strong protests as that will adversely affect the public navigating over rivers using Government Ferry service. We would like to remind you that Special Ferry service system was started after an incident in the decade of 1990s wherein Ferry at Vanxim refused to ply at mid-night (00.30 hours) in emergency situation of taking sick person for medical assistance. Late Ligorio F. Silveira brought this issue to the attention of then Captain of Ports and Special Ferry Service system was stared to cater to all needs of plying beyond regular hours.

You are therefore requested to roll back your proposal to hike the special ferry costs and keep it at current rate of Rs.55/-.

Sir/Madam,

This is to request your urgent attention to take action against ongoing illegal sand mining going on by use of canoes in Mndovi river opposite Santus Christus Church, Vanxim island. Extracted sand is transported via Trucks from Vanxim in a Ferry boat. We have received information that police officers attached to Old Goa Police station are involved in this illegal sand extraction. This is the reason for continues sand extraction in spite of High Court order against the same.

Will Goa Archbishop's office act decisively now to reverse Vanxim scam?

There is one opportunity coming on the way of the office of the Goa Archbishop to pull out of Vanxim scam. So far their lawyer either kept silent in Courtrooms or openly supported Gaunekar in Vanxim matters, something a matter of deep disgust and a scandal. This time all eyes will be fixed on the lawyers/ agents of the Archbishop. This is a moment of test for everyone to know whether Archbishop of Goa stays firm in the Vanxim mess or willing to take a step to reverse the trend by opposing Gaunekar and supporting village commons of Vanxim - the submerged paddy fields of Vanxim.

It will also be the test for the office of mamlatdar of Tiswadi as the Ligorio Silveira's complaint is still pending in this very office regarding the flooding of Vanxim paddy fields since April 07, 1995, now 23 years have gone by. This case is to come up in the office of Tiswadi Mamlatdar on September 24, 2018. One of the earlier Mamlatdars informed Bharat Mukti Morcha President orally that his office is put under pressure by top politicians and bureaucrats to clear the way for the corporate takeover of Vanxim. Let us observe if Goa Archbishop's office if it continues with Vanxim scam, or what do they make of the opportunity on their way. May good sense prevail.
